Mini-LED
LCDBest matchLCD with many small backlight zones: the brightest type, deep blacks for an LCD, some glow around highlights. Samsung Neo QLED is this.

How the ranking works: each answer changes how much a trait matters, and the score is a weighted average of each technology’s general tendencies (1–5). These describe technologies, not specific models — a good LCD and a basic one can differ more than their labels suggest.

By distance
TV size by viewing distance
The same maths as the calculator: the smaller size fills 30° of your view, the larger 40° — the recommended range.
| Distance | 30° (min) | 40° (max) | Common sizes in range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft (1.8 m) | 44″ | 60″ | 50″, 55″ |
| 7 ft (2.1 m) | 52″ | 70″ | 55″, 65″ |

| 9 ft (2.7 m) | 66″ | 90″ | 75″, 77″, 83″, 85″ |
| 10 ft (3.0 m) | 74″ | 100″ | 75″, 77″, 83″, 85″, 98″, 100″ |
| 11 ft (3.4 m) | 81″ | 110″ | 83″, 85″, 98″, 100″ |

Measure from your eyes on the sofa to the screen, not wall to wall. Room size alone doesn’t settle it: where the sofa and TV unit stand changes the distance by a foot or more.
Looking it up the other way round? See the viewing distance chart by TV size. Torn between two sizes? Compare 65 vs 75 inch or 75 vs 85 inch, or read what size for 10 feet (3 m).
How it’s calculated
How screen size and viewing angle are calculated
Screen size. For a 16:9 panel with diagonal D, width = D × 16/√337 and height = D × 9/√337 (≈ 0.8716 D and 0.4903 D).
Viewing angle. θ = 2 · arctan(width / 2 / distance). Recommended range: 30° (the SMPTE cinema guideline’s minimum for the most distant seat) to about 40° (THX’s “distance in inches × 0.835 = screen size” rule as an angle).
Best size for a distance. The angle formula solved for width at 30° and at 40°, converted back to a diagonal.
Seated view. The default eye height is 42 in (about 107 cm), with a 60° horizontal frame. In the wall-mount calculator, enter your measured seated eye height: the room stays fixed while the TV and height reference move. The TV and furniture share the same scale.
Movie formats. Content is fitted without cropping: wider ratios letterbox (bars top and bottom), narrower ones pillarbox.
4K detail. The distance at which one pixel subtends 1 arcminute, the usual definition of 20/20 acuity.
Why do the makers’ guides give a different number?
Samsung’s and LG’s Korean buying guides answer with a single rule: recommended distance = screen diagonal (cm) × 1.2, which both state is a 40° view. Reverse it and 10 ft gives about 100″ — the same as the top of our range. We add 30° (the commonly cited minimum viewing angle) as the bottom, so the makers’ figure always matches our upper number, and anything above 30° is a size that will not feel small.
| Distance | Makers’ rule (×1.2 = 40°) | Our 30° (lower) | Our 40° (upper) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 ft (2.1 m) | about 70″ | 52″ | 70″ |
| 8 ft (2.4 m) | about 80″ | 59″ | 80″ |
| 10 ft (3.0 m) | about 100″ | 74″ | 100″ |
| 12 ft (3.7 m) | about 120″ | 89″ | 120″ |
