How far should you sit from your TV?

Rules like “1.5× the diagonal” are shortcuts for one idea: how much of your view the screen covers. For a 65″ TV that means about 6.5–8.8 ft (2.0–2.7 m).

Distance for each TV size

Sit anywhere between the 40° distance (cinematic) and the 30° distance (comfortable). Tap a size to jump to its row.

The 4K column uses 20/20 acuity (1 arcminute per pixel). Sitting further away than that does not make 4K pointless — HDR, colour and processing still matter — but extra resolution stops being visible on its own.

Going the other way: size for your distance

Already know where the sofa goes? The TV size calculator has the chart by distance (6–14 ft) and shows each size from your seat. Measure from your eyes on the sofa to the screen, not wall to wall.

TV size for your room

If the TV goes on one wall and the sofa backs onto the opposite one, your eyes end up roughly 2.6 ft (0.8 m) in from the room’s length: the sofa’s depth puts your head forward of the back wall, and the TV stand adds a little at the front. That allowance is our estimate, not a measured average, so treat the rows below as a starting point and measure your own seat.

TV size range for common room depths, sofa against the back wall
Room depthEyes to screenSize for 30–40°
9 ft2.7 m ≈6.4 ft1.9 m 47–64″
10 ft3.0 m ≈7.4 ft2.2 m 54–74″
11 ft3.4 m ≈8.4 ft2.6 m 62–84″
12 ft3.7 m ≈9.4 ft2.9 m 69–94″
13 ft4.0 m ≈10.4 ft3.2 m 77–104″
14 ft4.3 m ≈11.4 ft3.5 m 84–114″

Past about 14 ft the 30–40° range runs beyond 100″, where a projector is often the practical choice: see TV vs projector. A sofa floated in the middle of a larger room, or a corner TV, changes the distance far more than the room size does; the calculator takes the distance you actually measure.

The method: viewing angle

Draw lines from your eyes to the left and right edges of the picture. The angle between them is the horizontal viewing angle. It accounts for size and distance together, which is why a 65″ TV at 6.6 ft (2 m) and an 85″ at 8.5 ft (2.6 m) feel almost the same.

30° comes from SMPTE’s cinema design guideline: the picture should fill about 30° of the horizontal view even from the most distant seat, and it starts to look small below that. It was written for cinemas and withdrawn in 2003, but it is still widely quoted as a viewing-distance reference. About 40° is THX’s living-room rule — seat-to-TV distance in inches × 0.835 = screen size — turned into an angle for a 16:9 screen (40.0°). Samsung’s and LG’s Korean “screen size in cm × 1.2” rule lands on the same 40°.

Angle = 2 × arctan(screen width ÷ 2 ÷ distance), the same formula as figure 2 of the SMPTE guideline. A 16:9 screen’s width is its diagonal × 0.8716.

The calculator’s “under 20° feels small” and “over 50° front row” labels are bands SofaView uses to describe the picture, not figures from a standard.
